How my research impacts research practice

Many of my recent papers have tended to be direct outgrowth of managerial problems that I solved for companies, and then wrote up the paper in an academically generalizable and rigorous manner. Hence there was little need for translation. Recently, I have a research agenda around machine learning applications using unstructured data (especially text) that can be used to obtain feedback ratings on relevant attributes. This technique can be used by chains and franchise operations to develop attribute level ratings on a periodic basis for each of their stores/hotel properties from unstructured feedback.

How I have worked with businesses

As part of the Yale Center for Customer Insights, I lead the quantitative marketing research projects, beyond my own consulting projects with companies and nonprofits. I have worked with several companies on research including American Express, IBM, Intuit, Webster Bank, P&G, Pepsi, Medtronic, FlipKart (India's largest e-retailer) and non-profits like HelpAge India. My approach to research collaboration typically involves initially discussing some projects of mutual interest where I have expertise, but largely driven by the company's managerial interests---offering to give them some initial insights using their data, with the understanding that we should be able to later produce published research using the data. Typically, the engagements are based on close interactions over the period of the projects, leading to future and ongoing engagements, with occasionally companies doing field experiments etc.

How I like to collaborate

Research Collaborations. If a speaking engagement is a starting point for initiating research collaboration, I would be happy to consider that. I had talked to the Salesforce people during MSI summit, and they seemed interested, and would be happy to work with them.
