How my research impacts research practice
In my ongoing research, funded by an MSI grant, I examine the role of technology in delivering healthcare solutions to patients, and how and why patients react to it in different ways. I previously served as the joint Editor in Chief of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing. In this role, I helped to translate academic and managerial insights to policy groups, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the U.S. Department of Justice. I look forward to continued involvement with MSI Member Firms!
How I have worked with businesses
I believe managerial problem solving and scholarly insights go hand-in-hand, and I approach such questions through the lens of a “consumer-based strategy” lens. Prior to earning my PhD, I worked in marketing at 3M Company, The Dial Corporation, and Motorola. These experiences informed my consumer and customer-based approach to practitioner-academic research collaborations. As an academic, I have collaborated on research projects with companies in the financial services and healthcare. For example, in financial services, I worked closely with a financial institution, helping them understand the needs of customers in a banking desert and the types of offerings that would lead to greater customer loyalty. In healthcare, I worked with a hospital to study patients' journeys in co-producing their healthcare experiences. In this research, we found that generally, patients with lower healthcare literacy tend to lag behind those with higher literacy, when it comes to compliance and satisfaction; however, when lower literacy patients are provided with appropriate co-production tasks relating to their medical service, the gap is eliminated. Thus, appropriate levels of patient coproduction can help contribute to downstream patient outcomes, as well as a stronger relationship with the healthcare provider and the organization.
How I like to collaborate
In the past, I have supported MSI conferences and have been involved in podcasts. I would be delighted to be involved in research collabortions, speaking engagements, and workshops!
